Since the beginning of this year, the problem of global core shortage is still obvious, but there has been polarization, and the shipments of mobile phones, graphics cards and other products have dropped significantly, resulting in excess demand for chips with advanced technology. Friends who are concerned about related products must have clearly felt the continuous price reduction of these products, all because of the decline in demand. Qualcomm, MediaTek, NVIDIA, AMD and other companies have cut orders a long time ago, resulting in a continuous decline in the demand for advanced technology. Under such circumstances, TSMC can only choose to close some EUV production lines. After all, EUV lithography machines consume a lot of power. Just one piece of equipment consumes more than 10 million kWh of electricity a year, and the demand is declining. In the case of , companies will also make adjustments based on costs. On the one hand, the demand for high-end chips has declined significantly. On the other hand, the demand for low-end chips has continued to rise, mainly due to the rapid growth of the new energy vehicle and smart home appliance industries, resulting in a serious shortage of chips for low-end processes. After all, a new energy vehicle requires about 2,000 chips, which is 3-4 times the demand for traditional automotive chips. The introduction of various smart electrical equipment into the home has also increased the demand for low-end chips. This is something that TSMC did not expect, so the president of TSMC recently issued a warning that the shortage of low-end chip production capacity is affecting the entire semiconductor industry. TSMC's current production capacity cannot meet customer demand for low-end chips. TSMC's remarks are also tantamount to indirectly acknowledging that the path chosen by the mainland foundry company SMIC is completely correct. In fact, SMIC has mastered the 14nm advanced technology, and it is only one EUV lithography machine away from 10nm and 7nm advanced technology. The 14nm process is regarded as the main production line, but mature processes such as 28nm are placed at the core position. Relying on the leading process scale such as 28nm, SMIC has achieved outstanding results. The financial report for the first half of 2022 shows that SMIC achieved revenue of 24.592 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 52.84%, and achieved a net profit of 6.252 billion yuan attributable to the parent. , a year-on-year increase of 19.28%. It can be seen that SMIC's focus on 28nm and other processes is indeed the right choice. Of course, SMIC is not just choosing the right one. Behind the rapid development, it is also closely related to the BCD process it masters. The BCD process adopted by SMIC is a monolithic integration process. Simply put, it is to manufacture three different components on a single chip to achieve multiple functions and greatly reduce costs. SMIC's BCD process has been applied on a large scale in the fields of automobiles and communications, and it is indeed leading the industry at present, because SMIC's BCD process has achieved 55nm, compared with the BCD process mastered by competing companies. SMIC is clearly ahead. After all, STMicroelectronics' BCD process is 90nm, TSMC has also stayed at 65nm, and SMIC has achieved 55nm.
